From complementary to win-win: Sino-Russian agricultural cooperation contributes to food security in both countries

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the crucial role of Russia-China agricultural cooperation in ensuring food security for both sides. To achieve this objective, the following tasks have been established: 1) systematically examine the advantages of Russian agriculture in terms of soil conditions and arable land area, as well as the advantages of Chinese agriculture in terms of land resources, climatic conditions, and labor force, to accurately understand the complementary foundation of agricultural cooperation between the two sides; 2) analyze the current development status of agricultural cooperation between China and Russia; 3) assess the practical contribution of Russia-China agricultural cooperation to ensuring food security for both sides. Methods. Statistical and comparative analysis methods were applied. The volumes of labor, land, and foreign trade were examined, and the dynamics of agricultural product exchange between the countries from 2014 to 2023 were analyzed. The scientific novelty lies in the comprehensive assessment of the impact of cooperation on the quantitative, qualitative, technological, and social aspects of food security. RussiaChina agricultural cooperation, founded on complementary advantages in resources, technologies, and markets, demonstrates a sustainable development trajectory. This interaction strengthens the food security of both countries in multiple dimensions: it ensures supply volume, enhances product quality, facilitates technological exchange, and stabilizes trade channels.
