Abstract. The purpose of the study is to comprehensively assess the impact of the service period duration on the intensity of lactation activity of cows in the conditions of modern high-tech dairy production. Additionally, the task is to develop an objective criterion for assessing the effectiveness of the service period from the standpoint of milk productivity and productive longevity of animals. Materials and methods. The study was carried out on the basis of primary zootechnical data provided by the agricultural enterprise “Krasnaya Zvezda” LLC (Moscow region). Holstein cows from the first to the third lactation were used as the object of the study. To analyze the impact of the service period (SP) duration on milk productivity, the animals were divided into four groups depending on the SP duration: up to 90 days, 91–150 days, 151–210 days, and over 210 days. The methods of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey’s post hoc test, and correlation and regression analysis were used. For quantitative assessment of intensity of lactation activity, a new indicator – intensity coefficient – is proposed, which is the ratio of service period duration to total lactation duration. Scientific novelty. It has been established for the first time that extension of service period over 90 days leads to statistically significant decrease in intensity of lactation activity, which can be a factor in reducing productive longevity of cows. The developed coefficient of intensity of lactation activity is proposed as a selection criterion allowing to optimize management of service period in highly productive herds. Results. The conducted statistical analysis has shown that extension of service period over 90 days leads to decrease in milk yield for 305 days of lactation. A significant decrease in the coefficient of intensity of lactation activity with extension of SP was established: in the group with SP duration up to 90 days the coefficient is 4.1–4.2, while in the group with SP more than 210 days – 1.5–1.7. Correlation and regression analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between milk yield and the duration of the service period only in the group with a service period of up to 90 days.
