Abstract. At present, the development of our country’s economy is taking place under conditions of aggressive and unforeseeable changes in the external environment, which raises the problem of justifying the directions of transformation of agro-food systems. The purpose of the study was to analyze the current state of interregional food relations in the Russian Federation, especially in the Volga Federal District and the Volga Economic Region, the extent of participation in them of the agro-food complex of Saratov region and development on this basis of theoretical provisions and practical recommendations for their improvement with a view to ensuring accelerated innovation-technological development of the region while meeting the population’s needs for diverse and quality food products. Common scientific methods were used to study economic problems of development of the agroindustrial complex, including in the field of competitiveness (based on the theory of competitive advantage M. Porter), as well as methods of comparisons and synthesis of relative indicators. Main results of the study: optimization of inter-regional food relations with respect for the sovereignty of each region in the main agricultural production sectors, including on the basis of participation (co-participation) in the formation and development of specialized high-technology zones for the production of selected agricultural products; Achieving a compromise between two interrelated processes – the establishment of specialized high-technology zones and the export of a large part of products outside the region; development of tools for developing interregional food relations in order to ensure a balanced food supply for the population of the regions. The scientific novelty of research consists in theoretical substantiation and development of a mechanism for convergence of levels of development of the agricultural sector of the various regions of the country and, above all, the Volga Economic Region and including the Saratov region; proposal of a mechanism for determining competitive advantages and competitiveness of industries and regions of the Volga Economic Region; creation of an analysis model, regulation and optimization of sales volumes of agricultural products by agricultural organizations to the processing industry.
