Abstract. Sustainable development of the Russian agro-food complex as a whole, as well as its individual structural elements, in particular, the food and processing industry, is a priority task in ensuring food security of the country. At the same time, the possibilities of economic growth of the food subcomplex are determined by the production potential and reserves for its increase. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors of growth of the production potential of the food industry. As a scientific novelty, we can highlight the author’s definition of the production potential of the food and processing industry, which made it possible to supplement the essential concept of “production potential” as an economic category, as well as the development of a methodology for identifying the production potential of the domestic food industry based on an industry approach. The scientific hypothesis of the study is based on the assumption that the production potential of the domestic food and processing industry is influenced by the state of its constituent industries, organized on the principle of a complex open dynamic system. The main results of the study include the analysis of the dynamics of production in the food industry of the Russian Federation and in its individual sectors, which showed a high level of self-sufficiency of the domestic market in individual food products, which determines the presence of a reserve for entering and expanding Russia’s presence in international food markets. An assessment was made at the level of individual sectors of such factors influencing the production potential of the food subcomplex as demand, financial condition, capital structure, state of fixed assets, investments, and innovations. It was shown that, according to the selected set of factors, all sectors selected for analysis are export-oriented and have significant reserves for growth in production potential. The conclusions made as a result of the study can be used to adjust the strategy for long-term development of the food and processing industries both at the federal and regional levels. A logical continuation of this study is the implementation of a multifactorial analysis of the production potential of the food industry using mathematical and statistical research methods using a regional and sectoral approach.
