Abstract. Oats (Avena sativa L.) occupy a key position in the structure of global sown areas, being one of the leading grain crops. In Siberia, including the Northern Trans-Urals, it is one of the main grain fodder crops. This crop is used for obtaining green fodder due to its ability to quickly form a powerful vegetative mass, which provides high yields and nutritional value. Methods. The studies were conducted in 2016–2018 in the conditions of the Northern Trans-Urals. The soil is gray forest, podzolized, and heavy loamy. The study used 81 samples from a collection and 22 breeding lines of spring oats. Scientific novelty. For the first time in the Northern Trans-Urals, the maturity and yield of the vegetative mass of oat varieties were evaluated. Results. According to the duration of the period from shoots to sweeps, groups of oat varieties were determined: early ripening (39–41 days) 1893 h 30 (Irkutsk), Silver (Belarus), etc.; mid-season (42–44 days) TM 04-22-2 (Tyumen region), Avalanche (France), Vicar (Canada), etc.; average late (45–47 days) Alf (Ukraine) and Local (Poland). During the evaluation of collectible samples by “shoots – wax ripeness”, it was found that the shortest in 2016 was in Hybrid varieties (Leningrad region) – 66 days, TM 04-36-18 (Tyumen region) – 68 days. On average, over the years of research, it was found that in 30.1 % of the studied varieties (31 numbers), the duration of the “germination – wax ripeness” period was 75–77 days, which corresponds to the average ripeness group. The average age was 46 (44.7 % of the studied) varieties. The group of late ripening, with a growing season of 80–82 days, included 20 varieties, which amounted to 19.4 % of the total number studied. Promising sources (25.2 % of all studied samples) were identified for the selection of oat varieties for feed use, combining various ripeness groups. In relation to the zoned Talisman variety, the identified sources were characterized by a stable excess of production indicators: green mass – by 3.5–21.6 %, dry matter yield – by 13.0–34.2 %, which determines their value as the starting material for feed varieties. Samples of various ripening periods are recommended for use in selection, which makes it possible to create a feed conveyor.
