Study of the toxicological properties of an experimental preparation based on organic chromium and zinc

Abstract. Chromium and zinc are essential trace elements involved in the regulation of metabolism, osteogenesis, hematopoiesis, and immune system function. Insufficient dietary intake of chromium and zinc is associated with increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, slow animal growth, and toxicosis manifestations. The body's demand for chromium and zinc increases during stress conditions [1], and it has been established that their supplementation in animal diets protects against the loss of a number of trace elements during stress and enhances the efficacy of insulin [2; 3]. Organic compounds of trace elements improve the availability of essential nutrients [4]. The purpose of this study was a comprehensive investigation of the toxicological properties of an experimental preparation based on organic compounds of chromium and zinc. The study included the determination of acute oral toxicity in 30 white mice divided into 5 groups (control and 4 experimental groups receiving the preparation at doses ranging from 0.53 to 1.93 ml/kg of body weight for 14 days), as well as an assessment of the local irritant effect upon application to the skin and ocular mucous membrane of rabbits. Methods. The results are based on analytical, biometric, and statistical methods, as well as the authors' own research. Scientific novelty lies in the first-ever safety assessment of a domestically produced experimental preparation based on organic chromium and zinc. Results. Our studies established that the preparation has no toxic effects, causing no mortality or significant pathological changes. Based on the dynamics of live weight and hematological parameters, all groups remained within the physiological norm. The preparation was classified as toxicity class 4 (low-hazard substances). Upon topical application, a weak irritant effect on the skin was revealed (total score 0.8), which completely regressed within 24 hours, and no irritant effect on the ocular mucous membrane was observed.
