Abstract. Relevance. The food issue undoubtedly remains relevant. Currently, it is particularly aggravated in the regions of Russia, taking into account the consequences of the sanctions confrontation for the resource base of the agro-industrial complex. Balanced development of agricultural and food systems in the regions is important from the point of view of ensuring national food security. The fundamental factor of agricultural production is land, primarily agricultural land, and the provision of this resource to the inhabitants of the region is essential in the food process. The purpose of the study is to identify the relationship between the availability of farmland and food self-sufficiency in the regions, as well as to develop conceptual directions for improving the level of food supply. Methods and materials. The dialectical method, abstraction, concretization, scientific and theoretical approach, and traditional methods of economic analysis are used. The empirical basis is based on Rosstat data in the field of regional statistics for 2001–2024. The information base of the study consisted of scientific publications, statistical materials, and regulatory legal acts. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development of a methodological approach to grouping regions according to the specific availability of agricultural land and the testing of this approach when analyzing the parameters of per capita production and self-sufficiency in basic foodstuffs. Results. Based on the conducted research, the hypothesis has been confirmed that the availability of agricultural land in the region is a determining factor in the self-sufficiency of basic foodstuffs. The methodological approach proposed by the author can be applied by authorized management bodies in the agri-food sector to analyze, monitor and develop differentiated measures to increase the level of food supply to the population and the development of local agricultural production, especially fruit and vegetable and dairy products, which will help to increase their accessibility to residents of the regions. The development of vertical farming, which makes it possible to increase the availability of fresh food for the population of the regions of the Far Eastern Federal District and other regions, is proposed as a promising direction to increase food self-sufficiency.
