Abstract. This article examines the development and current state of agricultural production in the Republic of Tuva as a key sector of the regional economy. A historical and economic analysis is provided of the transformation of the agricultural sector from a traditional nomadic economy during the Qing Empire to the planned production of the Soviet era and further to the market conditions of the post-Soviet period. The purpose of the study is to comprehensively analyze the development and current state of agricultural production in Tuva as a sector of the regional economy, identify key stages in the industry’s formation, and determine promising areas for its development. Methods. The methodological basis of the study is the principles of historical and economic analysis, allowing for a dynamic analysis of the industry’s development and the identification of cause-and-effect relationships between political, institutional, and economic processes. Periodization methods were used to identify qualitatively different stages of development, structural analysis to identify changes in industry specialization and production organization, and comparative analysis to compare indicators from different periods. Scientific novelty. Three key historical stages in the organizational formation of agriculture as an independent sector of the regional economy were identified. It was noted that the industry’s development was administratively implanted, resulting in a high dependence on centralized resources. Results. An analysis of the current state of Tuva’s agricultural sector was conducted using current statistical data. It was found that, following the profound crisis of the 1990s caused by the collapse of the state farm system, the region has seen a gradual recovery in agricultural production, primarily through small-scale farming. Key challenges remain transportation isolation, low marketability of products, a weak material and technical base, and underdeveloped processing industries. Recommendations. Sustainable development of the republic’s agricultural sector is possible through diversification of farming patterns, the development of cooperation, and government support, taking into account regional specifics.
