Analysis of economically valuable traits and adaptability of essential oil rose varieties in the foothills of Crimea

Abstract. The research purpose is analysis of economically valuable parameters of essential oil rose cultivars during long-term cultivation in the conditions of the Foothills of Crimea to determine their stability in connection with variable weather conditions of the region. Methods. Study of a set of indicators for essential oil rose cultivars was carried out in 2020–2025 on 12–17 years plants. According to developed methodological recommendations, morphobiological parameters (winter hardiness, doubleness, and flower weight), productivity indicators (raw material yield, essential oil collection) and biochemical indicators (mass fraction and main components content of essential oil) were analyzed. Statistical processing of obtained data was performed. Results. During the study period, average cultivar yield ranged from 37.2 ±5.4 c/ha (Lan) to 73.7 ±7.9 c/ha (Legrina). Mass fraction of essential oil in cultivars Raduga, Lan, Lada, and Legrina averaged 0.021–0.023 %. Lowest indicator was in cultivar Zolushka (0.010 ±0.001 %) developed for obtaining valuable product – concrete. Accordingly, cultivar Zolushka also had lowest decanted essential oil collection – 0.488 ±0.058 kg/ha. Highest essential oil collection was in cultivar Legrina – 1.632 ±0.182 kg/ha. For other cultivars – from 0.762 ±0.096 to 1.058 ±0.197 kg/ha. Average content of main essential oil components is within: citronellol – 4.51–11.42 %, nerol – 4.49–12.21 %, geraniol – 20.73–43.74 %. Essential oil rose cultivars are clones propagated vegetatively. Each cultivar is represented by a single genotype. Indicators variability is low, determined mainly by genotype reaction norm to changing weather conditions (factor influence share on main indicators is 61.6–75.2 %). Exception is yield, significantly dependent on weather conditions (year conditions influence share is 40.3 %, genotype – 43.3 %). Scientific novelty lies in expanded characterization of essential oil rose cultivars cultivated in the Crimean Foothills conditions, by main morpho-biological and economically valuable parameters, allowing identification of indicator variability degree depending on cultivar genotype and external factors.
