Experience of protecting and improving the health of dairy cattle from viral diarrhea in the territory of the Ural Federal District

Abstract. The purpose is to analyze the results of the implementation of the program for biological protection and health improvement of the regional herd from bovine viral diarrhea in the period 2021–2025. Methodology and methods: a set of clinical and laboratory studies, including experimental-theoretical, serological, molecular genetic studies, a systems analysis of theoretical sources, documents using statistical analysis methods. Scientific novelty. New data has been obtained and our understanding of the key factors determining the timeframe for establishing a herd protected from BVDV penetration has been expanded. The effectiveness of implementing individualized biological control and herd health programs for BVD in veterinary practice has been demonstrated. Results. Due to the high contagiousness of the pathogen and its genotypic variability, the seropositivity of herds to BVDV reaches 80 %. In 66.5 % of the examined placental and tissue samples from aborted fetuses, the BVDV genome was isolated using a molecular genetic method, and BVDV antigen was detected using a solid-phase ELISA method, indicating the prevalence of latent and subclinical forms of BVD in the epizootic process in herds in the region. Studying the epizootological characteristics of the pathogen and long-term monitoring of the immune status of susceptible livestock allowed the development and implementation of a comprehensive program for biological protection and recovery of agricultural organizations from BVD in production conditions. The program consists of two components: the creation of a cattle herd closed to BVDV penetration and the eradication of the BVDV pathogen from the cattle population within the economic entity’s territory. The development of an immune layer to the BVDV pathogen in susceptible livestock is achieved through systematic adherence to zootechnical parameters and specific preventive measures aimed at the physiologically complete development of the immune system in young animals. Eradication of the BVDV pathogen is possible through the development and implementation of individual programs for the removal of Pi-animals from the herd, taking into account the enterprise’s technological cycle and the biological characteristics of the pathogen. Systematic herd health improvement can reduce the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections by 3.0–3.5 times.
